Recently, officials of Cumberland County made a deal with the owner of biofuel station in Mechanicsburg for utilizing a part of renewable biodiesel for some of the county’s diesel engine vehicles. According to them, composition of biodiesel component with petroleum will make the environment o f county cleaner and will play significant role in increasing local economy.

Rich Moore, County Administrator stated that neither its usage will be affordable nor enhance the fuel efficiency. But, usage of biodiesel will reduce foreign oil dependence along with harmful greenhouse gases emissions. Moreover, local farms will be benefited a lot. As biodiesel effectively works with any engine, there is no need to install new parts in trucks.

This is undoubtedly a huge step towards environmentalism, which was commented by the county commissioners last year. Rick Rovengo, Democratic County Commissioner said, “How are our grandkids going to have the same standard of living as us?” He further added, “This is one small step.”

Secretary of Agriculture, Dennis Wolf stated that buying from state’s farm will enhance their margins of profit. John Gleim, owner of the company, said that county will be supplie with fuel comprises of 80 percent petroleum and 20 percent biodiesel. In Pennsylvania, Cumberland County is the first county to make such an eco-friendly commitment.

Gleim informed that biofuel is costly for him, but is immensely beneficial for the environment. So, he decided to opt for it. Before Cumberland County, Dickinson College started making biodiesel from the cooking oil which is declared waste!
