Server Farm Goes Green

aio

A small server-farm company called AISO.net has gone completely off grid. The building is equipped with two banks of ground-mounted solar panels. It generates 12 kilowatts of electricity. And batteries store the power for nighttime operation.

Also, in order to cut down on their energy consumption, AISO.net changed over from 120 individual servers to four IBM blades running virtualization software that lets one computer do the work of many. Solar tubes built into the roof illuminate the facility’s interior.

AISO.net’s co-founder Phil Nail, who claims the project cost about $100,000 says,

“Small data centers could easily start to adapt and make changes like this,”

Their monthly electric bills, which used to be as much as $3,000, has now come down to zero.
