Integral solar panels are fitted on a road in Wester Ross, Scotland. An Ullapool company developed this innovative Road Energy System. The system traps heat, which in turn warms up the water running through the under-road pipes. This water can be used for local domestic heating.
This system also does not allow ice to form on the road during the freezing winters. The technique was developed by Invisible Heating Systems Ltd. and pioneered in the Netherlands. The company muted this innovative idea after watching sheep in the Highlands, which often warm themselves by lying on roads.
