Eco Factor: Zero-emission EV covers a distance of 626.6km on a single charge.
Student designers from the Offenburg University have created a zero-emissions electric car that has set a new record for longest distance traveled by an electric car on a single recharge in real traffic conditions. The vehicle, dubbed Schluckspecht-E, covered a distance of 626.6km without recharging the batteries.
Unlike other record breaking attempts where electric vehicles are driven on racetracks, the Schluckspecht-E was driven on public roads under real traffic conditions. The vehicle is a joint effort of a team of 15 students, three research assistants and two professors. Before entering the competition, the 350kg fuel cell Schluckspecht-E was remodeled to include 12 lithium-ion batteries that weigh just 130kg.
The vehicle also included a new self-wound hub motor with integrated electricity, a battery management system that comes from manganese batteries-Montage-Zentrum GmbH (BMZ) and newly manufactured aluminum rims have also been added. The vehicle is propelled by two in-wheel hub motors that generate about 5.4hp each. The entire conversion process cost around €100,000.
