Rutland Water: Eco-friendly house designed to produce ‘Zero utility bills’

the newby family 9Rutland Water’s historic walled garden will soon be getting a ‘first of its kind’ eco-friendly home. The innovative Green House in Barnsdale will be one of the 33 full ‘earth-sheltered’ homes in the UK.

The front of the £140,000 four-bedroom house will be made of glass, with a grass roof. This roof will be capable of collecting its own rainwater and also supply some of its own electricity.

The environmentally-friendly home is designed by Charlotte and Phil Newby, of Queen Street, Stamford.

Their designing of the house will lead to almost zero utility bills, they believe. The 36-year-old Phil, a former director of English Nature and presently running a business devoted to environmental issues called Green Ventures said, We wanted to do something that would allow us to restore the garden. By building a house in the garden it means we can keep and restore it and hand it on in perpetuity.
