Robot Ships to spot toxic oil spills

university and york

A lot about oil spills and mass death of fish are heard, from the environs! — be it the incident of Mill Creek or Kuala Lumpur. A series of these recent incidents reminds me of the Robot Ships, designed and produced by the Department of Electronics at the University of York, to effectively tackle these potential oil spills.

The Robot Ships creates a tabletop ocean using the technology ‘Video Augmented Environments’. To clean up oil spills, the robot ship users can help or hinder robotic boats to work together, simply by touch. These oil spills are generally caused by virtual ocean tankers running aground on islands in the tabletop ocean.

These robots are autonomous seekers and search for toxic spills, which are then cleaned by cleaning ships. Following the success of earlier Video Augmented Environments produced in the Electronics Department at York, these Robot Ships were commissioned.
