Researchers develop nanotech ‘tea bag’ to purify water

Eco Factor: Inexpensive water filter based on nanotechnology.

Researchers at South Africa’s Stellenbosch University have created a unique “tea bag” that uses nanotechnology to purify drinking water and make is free from contaminants and bacteria. The device makes use of the same material as used in tea bags, but here the ingredients are ultra-thin nanoscale fibers and grains of carbon, which filter all harmful contaminants.

All a user has to do is to place the bag in the neck of a water bottle, where it purifies water as the person drinks it. A single bag can filter up to a liter of water, after which the bag has to be thrown away. The bag which costs less than half of an American cent has been aimed to provide safe drinking water to millions around the world.
