Eco Factor: Super-insulating roof created from cooking oil.

In addition to reusing cooking oil to power vehicles in a cleaner fashion, scientists are pondering upon other uses as well, which might not seem to be conventional. A team of researchers at United Environment & Energy LLC have created a bio-coating for roofs from waste vegetable oils.

The bio-coating serves as insulation to regulate temperature on the inside without consuming energy. The chemical properties of the new coating allow it to reflect light in the summer and then change roles during winter to retain more heat. The research team created the coating by manipulating used cooking oil into a non-toxic, unscented and non-flammable coating that can be created in any color from clear to black.

Moreover, the substance can also be created in tune with different climates. The team expects the coating to be available for commercial use in 3 years.
