It’s easy to work on a blank canvas but then what if you were challenged work on a used canvas? On the same lines, it’s a tough experiment for any artist to erect innovative and arty sculptures made from recycled stuff. Also it’s an ideal solution to waste reduction which would otherwise have gone to the landfills. And British sculptor Ptolemy Elrington has stood up to this test by sculpturing the best forms out of used and discarded kitchen appliances as well as shopping carts. Commissioned by various companies like Kenwood and Anglian Water, he has worked on exceptional recycled work of art that is inspiring, poignant, beautiful, and simply out-of-this-world. Hired by Kenwood to commemorate 60th anniversary of the company and Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, he crafted an 8-foot statue of the Queen from old/returned and broken cooking utensils and kitchen equipment. Dunno if the Royal couple was actually were pleased by such a trashy yet green creation! Its kinda unusual to merge ‘Royal’ and trash as one.

While Anglian Water hired Ptolemy to create designs from the debris cleared from the waterways. And hence came to life a giant dragonfly with a head made from shopping cart wheels and a Crayfish made from shopping carts too. Its tail is made from wheel brackets and the body is made from thicker steel sections. Don’t miss out the large heron made from the same. But why only shopping carts? Didn’t he get any more trash from waterways?
