Eco Factor: Zero-emission recumbent trike powered by solar and wind energy.
Ptreosail Trike Systems is aiming to cross the USA on a recumbent trike that is equipped with a patented sailing system. The trike’s sail is placed forward of the rider and low to the ground to better stability. Street-legal in 50 states, Ptreosail can operate in winds of up to 45kph and can also be driven without the sailing mechanism.
To reduce the weight, the Ptreosail’s masts are made from carbon fiber and the spar is made from aluminum. The solar assisted version of the Ptreosail, that will be used for the journey across the USA stores power from the sun and wind in deep cycle batteries, which help pedaling when the wind subsides.
The onboard solar panel system also helps in recharging portable electronic devices such as cellphones and GPS devices. Moreover, the panels also act as an overhead shade during hot sunny days.
