Powering landfill with wind turbines

federation of canadian municipalitiesThe Kaiser Meadows 3.2-hectare landfill site has planned to go green by installing wind turbines on it, to produce alternative clean energy. The Chester municipality has applied to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for funding to go ahead with the plans.

The wind turbines once installed, could save the municipality $50,000 to $75,000 each year. It would also lead the whole production in a more environmentally friendly manner.

David Daniels, the Municipality of Chester’s solid waste manager said,

We have done some research and looked at other areas with wind turbines and we think we have sufficient wind there… Our initial thought was just to power that (facility), but now we are looking at powering the whole landfill site.

Although the municipality is several years away from being able to build the towers, even after being funded for the the research, Daniels is quite optimistic about the plan. He said,

We should definitely get the funding to develop this project… There are only seven second-generation landfill sites in the province and given the technology we have employed here, I think we are already the best. I think we have a good application, and it will be so neat someday when we can kind of cut the power cord, so to speak.
