Potato growing industries need lots of fertilizers. Crop and Food Research – to reduce over a million tonnes of organic waste in landfills – will be taking a national initiative to use organic compost on the potato growing industry in Canterbury.
Brian Gallagher of Timaru District Council said that Canterbury councils and members of the compost industry will be meeting stakeholders in the potato industry.
He says that though the meeting would look at market development opportunities, it is not possible for him to comment on the economic viability of organic compost until after a trial.
