Perma Karpo Library: Green architecture amalgamated with local needs!

The idea of green architecture is not to follow a set pattern and design that stems from convention but to adapt and to change to make sure the structure is fit for the local needs and saves the energy as much as possible when local conditions are taken in to account. Good green structures constantly change their own design to make sure that they conserve as much energy as possible and also offer the best possible facilities that are available. This is the same whether you take a structure that is in the heart of the industrial world or in the heart of the Himalayas.

The Perma Karpo Library is part of the Druk White Lotus School, which is located in the Indian Himalayas. Arup became interested in the project when they saw the potential to influence the development of remote regions in the Himalaya. At Arup, every year an associate is given leave of absence to go and supervise the project on the site. At the same time, a team is in charge of delivering solutions that can be applied on site.

Amongst the technologies and design solutions used on site: ventilated Trombe Walls, wool insulation, a mud roof, timber panelling and even solar panels on the roof. The materials are locally sourced, and the experience and design solutions are worked out with the people on site to ensure that the knowledge remains in place. The library is part of a larger development which will be finished at around 2010. The structure is a perfect example of how green buildings can change the energy needs of a place and can help improve the local lifestyle with both their ingenuity and creative design. More such green structures not just the foot hills of the Himalayas but across the wide turf of the vast sub-continent could really ease the pressure on environment that we face today!
