Paper vs Digital: The fight is still on!

Will the dream of a paperless world be possible ever? Introduction to computers and then email along with various other applications have been made available to us for ages.

With newer technologies knocking on our doors, we still feel comfortable with using paper. It is a habit; we have been brought up using paper. In the interest of the environment, this habit is best broken.

Why can’t we fill the forms online or email instead of snail mail and make document on the computer or even use desktop scanners and OCRs (optical character recognition).

Like Nuance’s Omnipage 16 which convert print documents into digital ones with minimum effort. It can even convert document captured on mobile camera. Between $150 and $500 one can not only save a lot of paper but also save trees.

Just imagine how much paper we use and waste on any given day. The newspaper lying scattered, the snail mails in the overflowing drawers, printer paper lying here and there.

But how can we stop the use of paper in times where each one of us is surrounded by countless things made out of paper?

In an estimate, each person in the United States uses 749 pounds of paper every year. World consumption of paper has grown four hundred percent in the last 40 years. Nearly 4 billion trees or 35% of the total trees cut around the world are used in paper industries on every continent.

What we surely can do is to stop the wastage, use recycled paper, use less paper in office and institutions and go digital.

We cannot completely negate paper from our lives but as technology advances and people get more aware about the environment, things will start changing provided we use less paper and go digital whenever possible.

Things we can do:
-Instead of Paper tissues use cloth

-Use internet based research and computer to read documents.

-While printing, print on both sides.

-Get removed form catalogue lists, recycle that junk mail. Opt for email versions of bank statements.

-Try and use recycled paper.
-Grow Trees
