Opel all set to unveil its version of a low emission fuel cell car by 2017

Opel

Previously Opel (along with Vauxhall, as a subsidiary of GM) made its successful plunge into the ‘zero-emission’ domain of cars by launching its electric 5 door hatchback by the name of Ampera, exclusively in the Euro zone. And now to accentuate upon this sustainable image, the German brand is all set to design a ‘state-of-the-art’ car, driven by alternative power-trains such as hybrid and fuel cell systems. Reports say that it can be launched between 2016 and 2017, while the vehicle will most probably be a crossover between a station wagon and SUV, above the category of Opel’s Insignia.

From the perspective of business, Opel looks forth to increase its annual sale by 20 000, pertaining to this new model. According to Klaus Franz, Opel deputy chairman, the mid-level car will appeal to customers not just because of its fuel cell powered ‘green’ attributes, but also in relation to its overall technological prowess and functionality. Also, the car will be available in Europe and abroad, as opposed to Ampera, which is rather known as the renowned Chevrolet Volt in North America.

More importantly (for the company image), this car design will symbolically enhance the core essence of Opel. This is because it will be manufactured in the Opel’s historic headquarters in Ruesselsheim; being supported by various German car unions. That being said, the company also made it clear that the car won’t make its foray into the market before 2016. The decision is certainly related to unveiling of the prioritized new minicar code named Junior and other model lines including coupes, convertibles and even SUVs.
