OFIS Architects design carbon-neutral solar-powered offices for ELES

Slovenian architecture firm OFIS Architects have unveiled designs of new office buildings for power company ELES that will be located in Ljubljana in Slovenia. The sustainable offices have been organized as a miniature city that relies on natural sources for energy to create a positive working environment. The carbon-neutral office design, which measures about 32,500m2, also harvests rainwater that is later recycled for sanitation, landscaping and car washing purposes.

The large office site allows the architects to classify each program as individual units or departments that are linked together with ambient atriums and cross-connecting bridges. These connecting sections also allow natural light and air to flow through, which further reduces the energy required by the campus. The sustainable design exploits the use of renewable energy such as solar and wind energy. While solar energy is used for power and natural lighting, wind is used to improve natural ventilation.

The interior spaces make use of integrated greenery and atriums, while the exterior spaces include solar membranes that provide character to the building and also help generate renewable energy. The architects also aim to better the construction process by making use of natural materials such as wood.
