Ah! The worries of the food-versus-fuel competition may now can be answered by one mean – it is no longer the corn, but its cobs as well that are capable of producing ethanol. Thanks to Poet — a Sioux Falls-based company – and Ihnen along with several farm equipment manufacturers.

The novel project is developing ways not only to harvest, but also store and transport cobs that could one day be a lucrative alternative fuel source. Expanding its plant in Emmetsburg, Iowa, Poet would produce 125 million gallons of ethanol per year, 25 percent of it from corn cobs and fiber.

The corn cobs have a very lucrative market besides the ethanol production sector. The cobs are used as an organic abrasive on metal, plastic and wood giving way to huge cottage industry.
