Japan’s No.3 automaker Nissan has developed an accelerator pedal that will push back the driver’s foot when it detects excess pressure and poor fuel efficiency. The system comes with real-time fuel consumption levels displayed in the instrument panel, which could improve fuel efficiency by 5-10 percent depending on driving conditions. The Japanese automaker says it has plans to begin installing the ECO pedal in models next year by still there’s no word on the models that will get installed with this system.

Nissan is also taking a three-pronged approach to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, comprising improvements in vehicle technologies, driving behavior and traffic conditions. I think it is a good idea, and eco-minded people will probably like it as this one is a computer age version of the “double-spring” throttle .But I don’t see it pushing back against aggressive drivers as they could be the first ones to turn it off, or just buy a different vehicle!
