Chemicals from under the sea were previously used to fight diseases. But, now it’s the turn for the coral reefs. A newly-discovered coral reef found nearly 3,000 feet below the sea, can be of great value for the medical fraternity. The reef may help doctors fight not only cancer, but also Alzheimer’s disease including other illnesses.
The ecosystem of the new coral reef is discovered in the Florida Straits’ sunless, black waters. Florida Straits is a passage located between the Keys and Cuba. The ecosystem features coral thickets and limestone towers that are man-sized.
From these in-depth findings, the researchers will search for new medicinal compounds that might exist. The goal, according to John Reed, Harbor Branch’s chief scientist,
is to find something that kills cancer cells and doesn’t kill anything else.
