New York: Urban Fish Farm to reduce over-fishing of the wild and produce healthy food

It was only a few years ago, the New Yorkers were unfamiliar to the mild-tasting fish – tilapia. But now, tilapia is increasingly available in the United States, with almost all of it farmed and imported from China and Central and South America.

Apart from being the gourmet’s delicacies, the over-fishing of these wild populations is growing concerns. Hence, to provide a solution to it, Professor Martin Schreibman, director of Brooklyn College’s Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center has introduced urban aquaculture – raising thousands of tilapia packed tightly into 300-gallon fiberglass fish tanks.

Apart from finding a solution to over-fishing – injuring the water ecosystem – his innovative process of this aquaculture will also provide Americans with jobs and healthy food.
