New ways to extract and recycle hazardous LCD device-wastes found

lcd monitors declared hazardous

With the advancing technologies, and advent of luring user-n-pocket friendly gadgets, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have become a fixture of modern life — everything from pocket calculators and mobile telephones to wide-screen televisions. But, that too has also increased environmental problem caused by their rising discarding.

Neither there are no viable recovery techniques of the potentially hazardous liquid crystals, nor are there fully safe disposal options. To find a solution to this, scientists at the University of York are to play a pivotal role in a new research, which is aimed at averting this growing environmental problem.

The University’s Department of Chemistry scientists won a major DTI competition for investigating ways of extracting and recycling liquid crystals from waste LCD devices. Wish, it would bring in a great relief, not only to the environment, but also to human health.
