With power generating industry rapidly shifting to alternative energy production across the world, a 60 hectare farmland too in Serpa, Portugal, will soon see the world’s largest solar energy plant laid across it.

It is on the 150 acres, PowerLight will begin installing 52,000 solar panels next month. For the installation, it will be using $75 million of General Electric’s money. This huge surface area of the solar panels will be capable of generating 11 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to power heating and lighting systems of 8,000 homes.

With PowerLight continuing to run the plant, the conglomerate’s energy financing arm, GE Energy Financial Services will own the plant. The companies are expected to start operating fully in January.
