How much green is really green? This is a question that Japanese electronics major NEC will have a lot of difficulty in answering. This, because NEC has made some rather tall claims about its green credentials by including an Eco button in its Type VE notebook series. This button will minimize the energy consumption by 20% by lowering the CPU’s fan speed and by decreasing the screen’s brightness. I really don’t know why the Eco Button needs to be present as the CPU fan speed and the screen brightness can easily be controlled in the power manager option or alternatively by simple, free software add-ons. This definitely makes the Eco Button one more green gimmick. That apart, this notebook has pretty decent features with a 15.1 inch screen, an Intel core2duo processor, 1 gig of RAM and an 80 gig hard disk for data storage. Overall, a decent notebook computer.
