Eco Factor: Portable fuel cell to recharge mobile devices.

Mobile base stations are working hard to set up their towers in the remote places of the planet to connect them with the rest of the world. However, in most of these places power is a major issue and keeping cellphones charged isn’t that easy. Swedish company myFC AB is trying to help people in the developing and under-developed countries to keep their phones charged in a sustainable way.

The company recently unveiled its myFC range of portable fuel cell chargers at the Mobile World Congress. The device is a small hydrogen fuel cell power source which can work even under extreme environmental conditions. The exterior plastic housing is designed to be durable and has no moving parts.

The fuel cell inside the casing silently splits hydrogen into electricity via its “Proton Exchange Membrane”. The user has to periodically top up the fuel cell with energized aluminum powder, which reacts with water to generate electricity and release a small amount of water vapor.

myFC is designed in three different forms, out of which two are for outdoor use and one which could be attached to the back of a laptop screen. The H3 series of myFC is for charging a wide variety of portable electronic devices and offers an output range from sub-watt to 3W. The B2 series of the other hand is designed to power smart phones and other devices that required up to 6W of power.
