Cal Poly student team’s three-wheeled ‘Black Widow’ gets 2752MPG

Eco Factor: Fuel-efficient three-wheeled vehicle for Shell Eco-Marathon.

A team of mechanical engineering students at California Polytechnic State University is working on a three-wheeled vehicle for the Shell Eco-Marathon student competition, which according to the team gets a whopping 2752MPG. The vehicle, dubbed Black Widow, is the same which took first place in the 2007 Eco-Marathon and second place in 2008 and 2009.

This year, with a few modifications, the team is expected to hit the top spot once again. The team is also working on another vehicle dubbed the Urban Concept, which will participate in the competition’s Urban Concept category.

The team has been continuously improving the Black Widow since its creation in 2005 and has boosted its fuel efficiency from 861mph to the current 2752.3mpg. Weighing in at 96 pounds, the vehicle is propelled by a 3hp Honda 50cc, four-stroke engine that propels the car to a top speed of 30mph.
