Are you sick and tired of removing all those wrappers, bubble wraps, and needless packaging from the products you buy off the grocery stores? Well, here’s some good news. You are not the only one. A recent MORI survey on 1000 supermarket shoppers shows that about 92% of them want a reduction in amount of packaging.

This survey was part of the British newspaper Independent’s Campaign AgainstWaste. This particular campaign was launched by the newspaper on 22nd January, and has been a huge success till date.

Why was this survey taken & Campaign conducted?

Well, the MORI survey shows that packaging volume increased by 12 per cent between 1999 and 2005. The customers fill up about a third of the household waste with grocery store packaging. I think this is way too much wrapping. That’ for sure.

The packaging factor have been driving customers crazy. More packaging also means more weight. The sheer insanity of the companies have been proves from the following : you next door Albertsons or Walmart Super center will be having three layers of packaging for a group of four pears. A simple loaf of bread comes packed in multiple plastic wraps. A kit kat bar comes doubly wrapped in aluminum foil. This is a very sorry state of affairs in grocery stores.

Supermarkets have been trying to reduce packaging after the survey was published. Companies like Nestle, Coke, and Cadbury have signed Courtauld Commitment. By the agreement, the companies are supposed to reduce packaging by 5% by 2010.

Survey results:

* Some customers accept their social responsibility. About three quarters of the public are keen on accepting the social and environmental responsibility. So they shop at places like Food Co-ops where packaging is less and brown bags are used more.

* Some of these grocery stores have green credentials. This means their policy strictly adheres to saving the environment from pollution. When the customers were asked about this, they were surprised themselves. Survey Stats prove that about a third of the customers would stick to stores with green credentials.

This is a really good survey. The Independent seems to have taken the environmental and social responsibility very well. I think it’s time that you and I do our part of the deed by launching campaigns locally. Together, we can make the world a better place to live in.
