The Department of Defense (DOD) in United States have some of the world’s best means of producing renewable energy. If common masses of America could adopt these methods, then in no time America can become one of the first energy independent nations of the world. According to a charity group called Pew Charitable Trusts, by 2025, the DOD has plans of supplying at least 25 percent of their energy through renewable sources and highly emphasizes on using cleaner sources of energy for saving money as well as increasing national security.

The presence of US military in highly unstable and insurgency prone areas in the middle east and their dependency on petroleum-based fuels increases their security risk and so reducing the need of petroleum based fuels is one of the necessary steps for the US military. Moreover, using renewable energy also aims in saving our planet and its environment as well as preventing the rapid exhaustion of fossil fuels, which are widely used around the world, and will soon become exhausted.

In the recent years, the US military has introduced large-scale projects with an aim to boost the production of renewable energy for the benefit of both the soldiers and the environment. Last month, at Fort Bragg and Fort Bliss, two very efficient renewable energy products were announced for the military for conserving energy and designing new innovative ways for promoting energy sustainability. The installation of a scientifically designed vegetated rooftop in one of the buildings at Fort Bragg is part of the new renewable energy projects initiated by Army Corps of Engineers. This facility is expected to help the various Army units in preparing and inspecting vehicles and their transportation equipments via sea, rail and air. Although, the construction of the vegetated rooftop building cost a whopping 13.4 million dollars, but it will save a lot more money than this in the long run.

However, another very large-scale renewable energy project will soon begin at Fort Bliss in Texas and it is considered as a big step in reaching the goal of generating large amount of renewable energy for the US military. A solar farm of 20-megawatt will be constructed in an effort to supply uninterrupted power to all the divisional headquarters of the US military and this installation will be one of the biggest project of generating renewable energy in the history of the US military. This effort will not only reduce the dependency on non-renewable energy but will also reduce energy consumption. Therefore, with the successful installation of renewable energy sources all through the US military, there is a very good chance that America will very soon become an energy independent country with the help of the DOD.
