Military applications to get ‘Chromate-free’ eco-friendly coatings

are later painted gray

Chemical are being used for protecting military equipment, especially aircraft, from corrosion. It is for the first time, an environmentally friendly coating has been created. The new two-layered coating system is chromate-free — consisting of a non-chromate conversion coating and self-priming ultra-violet light materials.

Thanks to the researchers at the University of Missouri-Rolla for helping to develop this new material as it would eliminate human exposure to toxic, carcinogenic chromate compounds.

To add to it, the UV-curable layer would eliminate the use of volatile organic compounds. This compound is currently released into the atmosphere during the application and curing of corrosion coatings. Thus, it protects not only health but also the environment as a whole.
