Eco Factor: New application to reduce power consumed by a PC.

We are in an age where computers form an integral part of our daily lives. The office culture today is such that IT equipment alone consume 50-80% of the total energy consumption of any office. Due to reasons like being able to keep the computer attached to the network so information on the machine can be accessed at any time or updating software while everyone is out system cannot be shut down, resulting in wasting energy as well as money.

To give an answer to all these problems Microsoft is here with a solution. The company’s new Sleep Proxy system claims to help in bringing down energy consumption by 60-80%, without getting in the way of office systems. It can maintain a PC’s network presence even when it is turned off or put into standby mode.

When a desktop with a 17-inch LCD is powered on, it consumes over 100W, while in sleeping mode uses only 2-3W. When users access their machines remotely, both the machines stay awake, resulting in energy wastage. So, Microsoft came up with a technology that does not wake up the system each it is accessed remotely, saving power. This new system was tested in a research facility in Redmond, Washington, where computers were able to stay in sleep mode for more than 50% of the time.
