Mazda unveils its version of an all-electric vehicle based on the subcompact Demio

Mazda Demio

Decades after tinkering with alternative propulsion and ‘bio-cars’, Mazda has still not commercially produced a conventionally low emission electric vehicle. As in the present context, the Japanese automaker is all set to make its foray into the thriving market for plug-in vehicles. They have already unveiled their prototype, and according to the grapevines, this fuel efficient, battery-powered bantam car is based on the subcompact Demio (otherwise known as the Mazda2).

The powertrain of the prototype is incorporated with a sturdy lithium-ion battery pack, which actually makes the vehicle 10 percent heavier than its gas guzzling cousin. But, according to the company, this insignificant increase of weight will not hamper the substantial 124 miles (200km) range of the electric car.

Other performance specifications and pricing structure were not divulged by the company. However, Mazda made clear that this whole electric mode of transportation (facilitated by the EVs) will be based upon a preliminary leasing system, which will start from the spring of 2012. The leasing will be specifically related to government-based organizations and corporate fleets. Furthermore, the company expects this economic endeavor to help in their experience of designing better and more efficient electric vehicles for a more sustainable future.
