Mass-scale ‘Meat’ production in lab can help prevent animal slaughter

now pig meat to be produced in lab

Just a few years to go and technology may gift you with fresh meat grown in the lab, within a bioreactor! Dutch scientists at the Utrecht University are working on growing artificial pork meat out of pig stem cells in a mass scale, though they routinely grow small quantities of muscle cells in petri dishes for experiments.

They are trying to produce these meats in mass scale for the first time to help prevent the merciless animal slaughtering. The team hopes that by 2009, they will be able to identify the specific stem cells that will multiply the most, which will help create larger quantities of meat within a bioreactor.

The 2 million euro ($2.5 million) project is funded by the Dutch Government.
