Eco Factor: Environmentally-friendly mosque adopts energy saving techniques.

Architect Marks Barfield will be designing a £13 million environmentally-friendly mosque on a 0.4 hectare site in Cambridge. The mosque will be the first purpose-built mosque in the city and will adopt several sustainable features to reduce overall energy consumption.

Stunning skylights will adorn the mosque to keep it naturally lit throughout the year, the building will also be well insulated and temperature will be optimized using advanced and energy saving heating and cooling systems that will make use of locally gathered energy from ground source heat pumps.

The design will create a new permeable green edge around the structure with trees as well as provide bicycle racks at street levels and a car parking in the basement. After completion, the mosque will be able to accommodate up to 1000 people and include a café, teaching areas and meeting rooms.
