The £1.5 billion plans for two major offshore wind farms to be built in the Thames Estuary have received the green light by the government. One of these schemes — the London Array — would be the world’s biggest as it gets completed in about 2011.

Stretching over 144 sq miles (232 sq km) between Margate in Kent and Clacton, Essex, the wind farm will have 341 turbines! And the other project will be stretched across an area of 21 sq miles (35 sq km) and will be located seven miles (11km) off North Foreland, Kent.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said the £1.5bn The London Array project, when fully operational, would be capable of generating enough renewable electricity that can power 750,000 households!

The Array will contain 5 offshore substations along with 4 meteorological masts.
