Eco Factor: Portable solar power generators built inside shipping containers.

The U.S. Air Force has signed a $3.5 million contract with Lockheed Martin to develop portable solar power generators inside shipping containers for rapid field deployment. Shipping containers are cheap, easily available and ripe for recycling as well.

This new system is part of Air Force’s Basic Expedition Airfield Resources (BEAR) program, which aims to establish mobile bases with portable assets for thousands of troops. Lockheed Martin will hook into the existing BEAR grid with the goals of reducing fuel consumption by as much as 25 percent.
