Now that is a bit of an irony indeed. Most often, you are using you window panes to make sure that the sun does not hit your room. It is to keep out the unnecessary light and heat. But now you can use those very window panels to light up your room. Now don’t jump to conclusions on this one and listen it out fully. Window panes take enormous amount of heat and light and so are ideal to produce solar energy. Putting solar panels on them and using them to power your room is actually not a grand new idea.
But this Australian design student has taken the concept one step further and has made sure that the window panes themselves act as lights. This is not your ‘simply stick the solar panels on the window panes’ idea and that is what is so novel about them. They are lights that charge during the day and give you wonderful and tranquil lighting through the night. Damien Savio, an Australian Industrial Design student, designed these panels for his final year project.
Apparently his design is able to convert 4 hours of direct sunlight to a 60W light source for 6 hours. That means that a days charge can last for a long, long time and even maybe last in to the next gloomy day. The design, with some professional help, could be something that would make solar powered window panels a bit of a success. With this design you eliminate the use of extra wiring and other hassles that accompany the previous designs.
