Leonardo Lira creates a water purifying system that uses solar energy

Water treatment system

Leonardo Lira, a student studying electrical engineering from Instituto Federal de Goiás in Brazil, has developed a water treatment system that uses solar power to purify water, and is extremely eco friendly. The system does not run on electricity and uses sunlight, it does not absorb hazardous material/chemicals during the purification process, also, it does not emit carbon-dioxide while in operation. This amazing device is very easy to assemble and is low-cost, and would be extremely beneficial to communities in the low-income category where clean water is least accessible.

The device basically comprises plywood planks that are wrapped in silver foil and placed together to form a box without a lid. However, the sides of the box are open and arranged in an angle. Inside this device, if you place PET bottles of water then your water will be treated within 3-6 hours. This system basically concentrates the sunlight and heats the water to 70ºC (which is not boiling temperature), and the heating process makes water free from viruses, bacteria and other substances that are hazardous to the health of human beings.

Leonardo has already conducted tests on the water samples that he purified using this device with the result that water could be rendered clean and potable. This is truly a ‘green’ device that can reduce the health issues faced due to sanitation problems in certain areas as it is affordable and effective at the same time.
