Eco Factor: Energy-saving air conditioning system uses evaporation for cooling.

According to statistics, over 14 percent of the total energy consumed in American homes is utilized by air conditioning systems. Since most of the electricity comes from coal-fired power plants, this enormous energy constitutes in global warming. A team of engineers at the NREL are developing a solution to reduce the energy needed to power air conditioning systems.

Unlike standard air conditioning units which compress a circulating liquid refrigerant for cooling, this new system draws in warm air through a cooling unit that contains a water-absorbing compound that cools the air by evaporation. The team claims that the process can help save about 90 percent energy and the technology could be in your home in three years.
