The fashion future for once did not dominate the ramp floor of Paris or New York, but a Toronto biotechnology conference. Dresses made from a new fiber called Ingeo, made a breakthrough of biotechnology in the clothing industry. The fiber Ingeo is made largely from genetically engineered corn.
With increasing demand for Ingeo, more and more clothes will take birth in a gene lab. For withstanding sprayings of a popular weed killer, nearly half the corn crops of the nation are genetically engineered. So, the Nebraska-based company, NatureWorks LLC transforms corn into Ingeo does not separate this crop from the conventionally grown counterpart that comes into its factory.
Thus, there’s a good chance that every Ingeo product is derived from genetically engineered corn at least in part.
