2008 beijing olympicWith Beijing gearing up for the 2008 Olympics, China attempts to ensure food safety by beginning to track its vegetables. Beijing has planned to give every cabbage, carrot and pea pod its own identity number and file, the Beijing News reported.

According to the Beijing News report, during the Olympics, the city will need more than 5,000 tonnes of vegetables. They will come mostly from Beijing and the northern Chinese provinces of Hebei and Shandong. The report did not make any mention of fruit.

For a safety incident, the file of the vegetable can be immediately checked tracing the origins, according to the newspaper. The report is accompanied by graphics that show personnel at computers tracking the path of each vegetable from farm to plate.
