Eco Factor: Portable hydrogen generating device.

Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies made waves in 2006 when the company launched the first hydrogen-powered educational toy car. The company has some big plans for this year’s CES with the launch of the first portable desktop hydrogen generator being unveiled.

Dubbed the HYDROFILL, the device plugs into a power supply, solar panel or a wind turbine to automatically extract hydrogen from its water tank. The generated hydrogen is then stored in a solid form in small refillable cartridges. The cartridges feature metallic alloys that absorb hydrogen into their crystalline structure.

The storage technology is claimed to offer the highest volumetric energy density, which is even higher than storing hydrogen in liquid form. Once acquired, the stored hydrogen is released at low pressure, which is considered to be a much safer option as well.

The company thinks that the portable device is the first step toward private refueling of new generations of fuel cell electric vehicles, where the owner might generate all the hydrogen his or her car needs.
