GM’s Auto Plant first to receive LEED-certification in the world

and environmental design logoThe new Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant of General Motors was certified green by the U.S. Green Building Council‘s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program for its superior energy and environmental design and construction. LEED did this for the first time for an automotive manufacturing plant anywhere in the world.

The facility is expected to save over 40 million gallons of water and 30 million kwh of electricity over the first ten years of operations. The GM’s new crossover vehicles will be produced by the plant. The vehicles include — the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave. Their production will start during 2006’s fourth quarter.
