GM could debut plug-in hybrid crossover at 2012 Detroit Motor Show

GM Hybrid CrossoverRumors are in the air that GM may launch its new plug-in hybrid Crossover at 2012 Detroit Motor Show. This latest plug-in hybrid vehicle is said to follow the concept of Chevrolet Volt 2011 model. In response to a query put by Brad Berman of plug-in cars, Dave Barthmuss, Group Manager for environmental and energy communications of General Motors hinted in springing a surprise in the form of plug-in hybrid vehicles in the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. The new plug-in hybrid Crossover may appear with advanced features compared to Chevrolet Volt MPV5.

In May, 2011 GM cancelled their plans of launching the plug-in hybrid Cadillac SRX crossover, almost scheduled to hit the production floor. Reports from direct and indirect sources revealed that GM had to pull back their plans as it turned out be financially inviable. Although Barthmuss did not come up with the plan details, but a hint in press events is enough to create a huge impact in the media. Maybe the Group Manger of GM is little bit cautious before the launch. The pride of this internationally famous auto organization may be affected in case it withdraws this plan close on heels to the previous cancellation.

Following the trend of Chevrolet Volt MPV5, the latest hybrid Crossover model will also be provided with a 152 PS (150 HP) electric motor that will deliver 273lb-ft (370 Nm) torque. The motor will be charged by a Li-ion battery of 16KWh power, and a 1.4 liter capacity gasoline engine is added for an extended run. This hybrid vehicle will provide a meager mileage of 51.5km when run on electric power, but with the gasoline energy generator the mileage can be extended up to an appreciable 482km (300 miles). One cannot rule out the possibilities of introducing the concept of Chevrolet Equinox and plug-in concept of the erstwhile Buick Crossover and Saturn Vue models.

GM is well aware of the consumer’s dissatisfaction with the pure electric vehicles and is trying to bank on the situation launching extended plug-in hybrid crossover model next year. The auto company is also well focused on the demand of modernized electric vehicles in the near future, given the present scenario of rising oil prices, to remain ahead in manufacturing green vehicles compared to its peers. The auto lovers will have to stay tuned for the features and prices of the hybrid Crossover model to be launched next year. GM will have to maintain optimum buying conditions for a dream run.
