Germany’s nuclear power plants to go offline by 2022

Nuclear Power Plant

The nuclear disaster at the Fukushima power plant has promoted Germanys coalition government to shut down all of the countrys nuclear power plants by 2022. Germany has a total of 17 nuclear plants, that generate about a quarter of the countrys total power needs, out of which seven oldest reactors have already been decommissioned following safety inspections conducted after the Fukushima disaster.

Before the Fukushima disaster, Germanys government had pushed measures to extend the lifespan of the countrys 17 reactors with the last one scheduled to go offline in 2036, but according to latest reports, all the power plants will be decommissioned by 2022, and will be replaced by clean renewable energy generators. Energy from wind, solar and hydroelectric power currently produce about 17 percent of the countrys electricity, which will be boosted to about 50 percent in the coming decades to take over the offline nuclear plants.
