Eco Factor: Vessel made from sustainable materials gets powered with recycled vegetable oil.
Australian eco-sailor Inigo Wijnen has created a fossil-fuel-free yacht, dubbed as Gaiasdream, for a trans-Pacific expedition this December. The twin-hulled vessel runs on discarded vegetable oil, thanks to sustainable engineering used to create it.
Inigo spent the past 14 months building the 22-meter-long craft from sustainable Australian plantation timber. The vessel relies on rooftop solar panels to slake its electrical needs. It can accommodate 12 people and carry 7 tons of cargo.
Before setting sail for the ambitious voyage, Inigo will eye a temporary berth for his creation at the Australian National Museum. At the Sydney Harbor, Gaiasdream will participate in the 2010 Classic & Wooden Boat Festival. Here, Inigo will allow people to be acquainted with his creation, and will answer their queries.
