Phoenix-based First Solar Inc. will soon have an additional solar cell manufacturing plant in Malaysia. The new plant is scheduled to start production in early 2009. The plant is being built at the cost of $150 million and will be adjacent to two previously announced plants currently under construction in Malaysia.
Why another new plant? Well, apparently the company needs this facility so that it can meet the demands of new sales contracts, also in Malaysia the company will get a 10-year tax holiday.
Are you wondering why there is such a demand for First Solar Inc products? The company manufactures solar modules with an advanced thin film semiconductor process that significantly helps to lower solar electricity costs. Thus, by enabling clean renewable electricity at affordable prices, First Solar provides a good economic alternative to conventional electricity and the related fossil fuel dependence, greenhouse gas emissions.
Hopefully, there will be more companies like First Solar in future who will manufacture innovative solar products and thus display their commitment in improving the global environment and maintaining its fine ecological balance.
