Eco Factor: Solar panels on Fiat’s cars will power onboard devices.
Fiat has collaborated with Irish solar manufacturer SolarPrint to develop low-cost photovoltaic modules that can be integrated in Fiat’s cars to power onboard devices such as air conditioning and heating systems. The company believes that the addition of solar panels will boost fuel consumption by up to 15 percent and also keep the cars cool while the engine is off.
Audi, Volkswagen and Toyota already employ similar technology to better the fuel consumption of their cars by offsetting parasitic drain from energy-hungry components.
