It’s easy to pen down appreciative words about green computer concepts but it isn’t as uncomplicated and practical to trade your current machine for some kinda futuristic yet ineffectual eco-friendly computing concepts. Finally it all boils down to what and how much the green counterpart is capable of rendering to suit your work requirements. Because being green isn’t the only preference! And here’s the winner all the way, scoring the best in every field. Selected as the winner in the ReGeneration: International Green Computing Technology Design Competition, it managed to triumph over five finalists that focused on being as inventive as environmentally responsible. Invented by Vas Obeyesekere of Point Innovation’s PC design, Evolve is a modular concept for both mobile and home computing. It eliminates the need to replace your computer too. A smart move to help reduce e-waste menace!
Whether your PC usage requires basic or powerful tasks, Evolve’s components can be customized to perform them, and when your computer needs evolve, you simply upgrade the necessary parts and plug it in. The beauty of the design is in its simplicity.
Being green, of course, is at the core of this computer. It incorporates a variety of effective methods to lessen its environmental impact by using materials that are biodegradable, renewable, and in cases reusable. It houses a LEES capacitor battery, which does not use chemical reactions to create energy. The hard drive is a solid state hard drive, much more durable and much less power hungry than standard hard drives. The casings for the computer and module shells are derived from corn based PLA and the PCB board is made from keratin fibers and soy epoxy. Even the OLED screen is much more energy efficient, thinner, more durable and capable of being mass printed in large rolls.
Conservation is another principle employed by this design. And it is signified by the “power slider” feature which acts as a main point of interaction above the keyboard. It is linked to the software and hardware, allowing you to set the level of processing power needed.
Nothing goes to waste, even the box it is shipped in can be used as a display stand, and it is the kind of computer you can imagine both home and business users alike using today. The insights and inspirations that molded Vas’ design philosophy shed some light on the inner workings of the technology design world as a whole. To sum it up in one line, Evolve incorporates subtle green branding, but maintains an overall aesthetic that is currently accepted as pleasing to all consumers.
