EU’s first commercial ‘solar tower thermoelectric technology’ power plant opens in Spain

This new Solar Platform located in the municipality of Sanlucar la Mayor (Seville) was inaugurated last week, by president of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Manuel Chaves and the co-chairmen of Abengoa, Felipe and Javier Benjumea.

The 11 MW plant is located 25 kilometers west of Seville. It took the plant more than four years to build — from July 1, 2001 to December 31, 2005. In a much larger plan to build solar power in the region, this one is the first.

To be completed by the year 2013, the 300 MW Sanlucar la Mayor Solar Platform requires an investment of 1,200 million euro (1.6 billion US dollars). It will be utilizing a wide range of solar technologies. The plant once built, will have the capacity to produce sufficient energy to let some 180,000 homes consume power from it.

The project will eventually prevent the emission of more than 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per year. The world’s first tower technology solar thermoelectric power plant is constructed for commercial operation with the first two power plants to be brought into operation at the Sanlucar la Mayor Solar Platform — the PS10 and Sevilla PV.

It would be the largest low concentration system photovoltaic plant.
