Eco Factor: Whitelee wind farm to add turbines with power capacity of 1.67 MW each.
Europe’s largest onshore wind farm will soon be welcoming another 75 turbines to add to its renewable energy generation. ScottishPower Renewables is planning a massive expansion to the current 140 turbines wind farm to the south of Glasgow. Presently the Whitelee wind farm on Eaglesham Moor produces enough electricity to power 180,000 homes, but after these new additions the electricity generating capacity will increase by two third.
ScottishPower Renewables will be adding six ECO 74 turbines with power capacity of 1.67 MW each. After the installation of 75 turbines is complete in 2012, the wind farm will produce 539MW of energy, which is sufficient to power nearly 300,000 homes. With this expansion, the Whitelee wind farm will become one of the largest onshore wind farms in the UK.
