I am pretty sure that the girls would be very interested in this and since many of the guys might be on the lookout for a gift to make up for what they screwed up recently, this might interest them too. But the ones that this should really please the most is those set of environmentalists who always clamour for recycling as this does that in the most beautiful possible form. There were many experts who apparently told the folks at Escama Studio many years back that their concept of creating beauty out of trash would never work. Now I’m pretty sure many of them order their handbags with glee.
Escama Studio combines sustainable design with fair trade principles to create a new breed of alluring fashion accessories. Based in San Francisco, Escama Studio works directly with two Brazilian craft cooperatives — Cia do Lacre and As Panteras do Lacre, to design and produce these sleek, modern pieces using traditional crochet techniques and recycled aluminum pull-tabs. The idea really has taken off and these beautiful and elegant looking handbags are available at prices ranging from $85 to good $100. Of course, the price changes with the model and the color.
While not many would have really given such a bold enterprise much of a chance, it once again shows that most of what goes in to the landfill can be used again and used in spectacular fashion if the right minds put in the right amount of time on it. Now hopefully others will follow on the green path.
